The 1951 Bell Manual for Using a Rotary Telephone » Design You Trust

In 1951, Bell Telephone System introduced a guide called “The Telephone and How We Use It” which was designed to help elementary school students and others better understand the operation of classic rotary dial phones. The guide covered basic phone use, handling emergencies, and polite phone etiquette.

The invention of the rotary dial phone began in 1836 with various proposals for dials to send telegraph signals. Almon Brown Strowger invented a telephone dial in 1891, overcoming existing technical limitations. The guide is a record of this historical development and early designs of the telephone.
